History
- Kinbaku refers to tight binding.
- Shibari, a more Western perspective, encompasses anything involving rope.
- During the Edo period, rope was used for both restraint and punishment.
- Kabuki theater started to stylize torture bondage.
- Criminals were tied in a manner that reflected their crime.*
- The transition of bondage into a sexual art form didn't become widespread until the 1900s.
Safety Instructions
- Shibari is part of RACK (Risk Aware Consensual Kink).
- Always check for consent with your partner, as it can change daily.
- Remember, it's always okay to stop at any time.
- Keep in mind that no one knows everything.
- TALK! If something feels off, speak up. When in doubt, untie!
- TALK! Riggers, ask questions. Models, let your rigger know when something feels strange.
Nerve endings - Important!
Ignoring nerve endings can lead to long-lasting or even permanent damage. Understanding this is crucial for safe tying.
- Radial outside (thumb, index, and middle finger), Ulnar inside (pinky):
- If someone mentions tingling in their hands, ask which fingers they feel it in.
- If it's the thumb, index, or middle finger, check the outside ropes on the arm.
- If it's the pinky, check the inside ropes on the arm (never have knots there).
- If it's all fingers, it's probably due to blood circulation. Feel their hands; they should be colder.
- Ask them to squeeze your hand; they should always be able to do so.
- Here's how to check the radial nerve and the ulnar nerve.
- Legs generally have fewer issues because they have more muscle, allowing nerves to move around more easily.
- Always double-check.
- If in doubt, consult a doctor. They won't be surprised, so speak openly.
